When it comes to chiropractic adjustments most people associate it with the audible popping noise that it can produce. There are hundreds of videos that you may have seen online of chiropractors adjusting patients and producing a very loud pop, but this is not always the case. There are various maneuvers and techniques that a chiropractor can use that don’t always create the popping noise that many think about when it comes to an adjustment. In this post, we will cover what exactly an adjustment is and what causes the popping noise that can be heard during an adjustment.
What is a chiropractic adjustment?
A chiropractic adjustment is when a trained specialist uses their hands or an assisted instrument to perform a controlled maneuver/thrust to fix misalignments of the spine or other joints in the body. There are many types of chiropractic adjustments that can be performed based on the patient’s conditions or the doctor’s training. Some of these techniques are:
Diversified Technique – This is one of the most commonly used techniques among chiropractors. This type of adjustment focuses on using a very precise hands-on thrust which restores joint alignment and motion. At Apex Chiropractic, we commonly utilize the diversified technique when adjusting our patients.
Gonstead Technique – Another popular technique among chiropractors, the Gonstead method, focuses more on the pelvis and sacrum as part of the adjustments. This type of adjustment is also hands-on and is used to restore normal function of the spine and discs. At Apex, we utilize Gonstead analysis to determine what areas of the spine need to be adjusted.
Thompson Drop Technique – Another technique used at Apex Chiropractic is the Thompson Drop Technique. This technique utilizes specialized chiropractic tables that come with drop pieces. Usually there are two pieces of the table that drop, one for the spine and one for the pelvis and sacrum. With this adjustment, the provider will place their hands on the area that needs to be adjusted and apply a quick thrust that will cause a portion on the table to “drop” a very short distance. Although the table dropping can produce a loud noise, there is not always a “pop” associated with a drop table adjustment.
Activator Technique – With this technique an instrument called an activator is used to perform the adjustment. An activator is a spring loaded tool that chiropractors use to apply a quick low-force impulse to a specific spot to help restore function in the joint. This tool is very helpful when adjusting the neck of older patients or adjusting areas where there is a lot of muscle tension. There are no popping noises that occur with this adjustment, but studies have shown it is still a very effective form of treatment. At Apex Chiropractic, we may utilize an activator for patients that are scared or nervous about traditional chiropractic adjustments.
What is the audible “pop” that can be heard when receiving an adjustment?
Most people think that when they hear a “pop” during a chiropractic adjustment that the noise is the bone moving into place. This is actually not the case. Over time, our joints can get filled with a gas called nitrous oxide. These gasses build up into the joints and can form gas bubbles. The popping noise that is heard during an adjustment is the sound of released gas or gas bubbles from the joints. This release occurs when the joint is moved.
Do you need an audible “pop” for a successful adjustment?
Although many people think they need to hear a “pop” for the adjustment to be effective, the popping is only a secondary effect and not a necessity for the adjustment to “work.” When performing a chiropractic adjustment, the most important objective is to move the joint . Movement of the joint to correct the alignment and bring back mobility are the two main concerns for a chiropractor when performing an adjustment. Sometimes the joint will move and won’t produce an audible “pop”. This is completely fine as long as there was movement that occurred with the adjustment. Having the “pop” sound happen is not important for a successful adjustment. There are evidence based articles that state that getting an adjustment without an audible “pop” is just as effective as an adjustment with a “pop” as long as the joint was actually moved.
At Apex Chiropractic, we utilize a number of different techniques that get the joints moving and restore proper alignment and function to the spine. We devise a specific care plan for each patient and use the best adjustment technique for their condition.
